چکیده

We propose new burst assembly techniques that aim at reducing the average delay experienced by the packets during the burstification process in optical burst switched (OBS) networks, for a given average size of the bursts produced. These techniques use a linear prediction filter to estimate the number of packet arrivals at the ingress node in the following interval, and launch a new burst into the network when a certain criterion, which is different for each proposed scheme, is met. Reducing the packet burstification delay, for a given average burst size, is essential for real-time applications; correspondingly, increasing the average burst size for a given packet burstification delay is important for reducing the number of bursts injected into the network and the associated overhead imposed on the core nodes. We evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes and show that two of them outperform the previously proposed timer based, length based and average delay-based burst aggregation schemes in terms of the average packet burstification delay for a given average burst size.

New assembly techniques and fast reservation protocols for optical burst switched networks based on traffic prediction

We propose new burst assembly schemes and fast reservation (FR) protocols for Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks that are based on traffic prediction. The burst assembly schemes aim at minimizing (for a given burst size) the average delay of the packets incurred during the burst assembly process, while the fast reservation protocols aim at further reducing the end-to-end delay of the data bu...

A new window-based burst assembly scheme for TCP traffic over OBS

In this paper, the impact of burstification delay on the TCP traffic statistics is presented as well as a new assembly scheme that uses flow window size as the threshold criterion. It is shown that short assembly times are ideally suitable for sources with small congestion windows, allowing for a speed up in their transmission. In addition, large assembly times do not yield any throughput gain,...

A Novel Burst Assembly Algorithm for Optical Burst Switched Networks Based on Learning Automata

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is widely believed to be the technology for the future core network in the Internet. Burst assembly time at the ingress node is known to affect the traffic characteristics and loss distribution in the core network. We propose an algorithm for adapting the burst assembly time based on the observed loss pattern in the network. The proposed Learning-based Burst Assemb...

Prioritized burst segmentation and composite burst-assembly techniques for QoS support in optical burst-switched networks

In this paper, we address the issue of providing differentiated services to IP packets over an optical burst-switched network. QoS is supported by introducing prioritized contention resolution policies in the network core and a new burst assembly technique at the network edge. In the core, contention is resolved through prioritized burst segmentation and prioritized deflection. The burst segmen...

Issues on Performance Assessment of Optical Burst Switched Networks: Burst Loss Versus Packet Loss Metrics

With the increasing interest in optical burst switching (OBS) networks, the performance assessment of this kind of networks became of particular concern. Recently, some authors suggested that burst loss was not a reliable performance assessment metric for OBS networks. Refuting this claim, this paper presents simulation results obtained for a ring network, using real tributary IPv4 packets as s...
